To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Sri Lanka regaining Independence, three coins in the denomination of Rs. 5,000/=, Rs. 1,000/= and Rs.10/= were issued on 4th February 1998. These three coins are round in shape and have milled edges. The coin in the denomination of Rs.1,000/= has been struck in Silver (0.925 Ag). The obverse of the coin depicts the Lion sculpture which belongs to the Anuradhapura period. The figure '50' in numerals and the years 1948-1998 on either side of the figure '50' is depicted at the bottom centre of the coin.
Independence Anniversary in words in Sinhala language appear at the apex of the coin and in Tamil and English languages on either side along the periphery. The reverse of the coin depicts the National Flag of Sri Lanka and the value Rupees One Thousand in numerals and in words in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages within a circle of traditional Sinhala Liyavela artwork. Sri Lanka in Sinhala language appear on the apex of the coin and in Tamil and English languages along the periphery. The year 1998 is depicted at the bottom centre.
As with all Sri Lankan currency the lettering is in Sinhala, Tamil & English.
